For completeness, we also graphed the 10 most expensive cities in California for auto insurance. You can find those in the graph below. There is a number of factors about a particular location that may impact the price of auto insurance in that city. Among those, are things like car theft rates, the number of crashes per year and annual road conditions. This is why larger cities, with more traffic and more crime, tend to be more expensive than rural areas. Insurers bake such factors into the location variable when establishing prices for a region. They do so to try and price their product accordingly, based on the relative risk to insure a driver there.

We want readers to know that price is just one variable they should use when evaluating an insurer. The cheapest option may not always be the best. Make sure to look up customer reviews, paying particular attention to how good various companies are at handling claims. In the event of an accident, you don’t want to find yourself fighting with your insurer to try and get your money. Also, bundling different insurance products can produce significant savings. If you already have a renters or home insurance policy with a provider, it’s worth obtaining an auto insurance quote from them. The bundle may result in the cheapest cost to you.

Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements in California

If you live in California, the cheapest auto insurance policy you can get is typically that which offers you the minimum amount of coverage. Still, the state mandates you carry a minimum amount of coverage to maintain adequate protection for you and other drivers on the road. The minimum insurance requirement is there to make sure, in the event of an accident, you can cover the medical expenses of other drivers should you be at fault. Of course, in a traditional sense, insurance also protects your property in the event it’s stolen or damaged. In California, drivers are required to carry the following limits:

  • $30,000 for injury/death to more than one person.
  • $5,000 for damage to property.
